sinfonia ViVA makes a welcome return to the Northern Aldborough Festival for a tour-de-force of a programme celebrating the genius of Richard Wagner. Benedict Holland directs the programme in the company of Ann Murray (mezzo-soprano).
Ann Murray (DBE) has been acclaimed for her performances of the great Handel, Strauss and Mozart roles in the opera houses of Hamburg, Dresden, Brussels, Paris and numerous others. She has strong links with English National Opera, the Royal Opera, Covent Garden and Bavarian State Opera. In 1988 she was made a Kammersängerin, of Bavarian State Opera.
Benedict Holland studied the violin at the Royal Academy of Music with Manoug Parikian and later with Yossi Zivoni at the Royal Northern College of Music. He has been the Leader of ViVA since April 2001 and became Artistic Advisor in May 2006. He relishes the diversity of this job, which entails appearing as director and soloist, performing chamber music and participating in education projects. In August 2006, he made his conducting debut with the Orchestra.
Nicholas Kok is an extremely versatile conductor. He studied at New College, Oxford and the Royal College of Music where he won a Countess of Munster Award and the Lofthouse Memorial Prize.
More recnetly, from 1996-2006 he was Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of sinfonia ViVA and he is currently the orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor. Other Orchestras and ensembles he has worked with include the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony, Royal Scottish National, Radio Sinfonie Berlin, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, to name but a few. He writes and arranges music for television and radio, as well as working as banda conductor on numerous recordings for Opera Rara and Chandos.
