Opera in 2 Acts: Sung in English
Director: Jeff Clarke
Music by: Giuseppi Verdi
Libretto by: Felice Romani

First performed at Teatro alla Scala Milan, September 5, 1840

Since its inception in 1994 Opera della Luna has established itself as a highly original ensemble of extremely versatile singers and comedians. Led by Artistic Director Jeff Clarke, it takes its name from Haydn's operatic setting of Goldoni's farce II Mondo della Luna. The company's policy is to create new and innovative productions of musical theatre, comic opera and operetta, in English, and to tour them to mid-scale venues all over the UK. The company has won considerable acclaim for its highly entertaining and inventive performing style.

This is a 19th century comic opera replete with mix-ups and misunderstandings. It was so popular that Verdi was commissioned to make a new musical setting of the existing text. In only his second opera, we hear the young Verdi begin to emerge from contemporary musical models to forge the language that was to become his own. Set in Southern Italy in 1946.
