Comic Opera in 2 Acts: Sung in English
Music by Gaetano Donizetti
Libretto by Felice Romani
Orchestra of Opera Box conducted by Fraser Goulding
First Performance: Teatro della Canobbiana, Milan, May 12,1832
Setting: A Basque village in the 19th century
Popular since its premiere in Milan in 1832, this charming comedy has delighted audiences throughout the world. It tells of the peasant Nemorino who takes some magic elixir sold to him by a quack doctor, so that he can win the heart of a wealthy land-owner, who (to spite Nemorino) has announced her marriage to a sergeant. The score is full of memorable tunes, Caruso to Gigli, and the aria that catapulted Pavarotti to fame. For this production Opera Box will be using their own new witty English translation.
Special Arrangements:
During the 75 minute interval the audience may dine in the Festival restaurant situated in Aldborough Village Hall immediately adjacent to the Church. Alternatively, guests may picnic within the church grounds. In the event of inclement weather a marquee will be available for picnicking. Guests may bring their own picnic or order a picnic hamper from the Festival Office (these can be collected at the Festival Bar at the start of the long interval).

Black tie optional.
